oldsmobile station wagons : Sounds like someone is hung up on semantics. The registration for my Discoclasses it as a "station wagon". BFD. Think about why the large stationwagons that Detroit used to crank out became extinct. I suspect it wasn'tbecause the need for carrying a family and their stuff disappeared. It tookthe automakers a while to find their way around the regulations that killedwhat we typically refer to as a station wagon. In many cases they justdropped more seats into a pickup truck design and once again the proverbial"soccer mom" could haul her kids and their friends to school etc. The needfor station wagons didn't disappear, it just got a bad name (like some peopleare trying to attach to SUVs). And until either SUVs too are regulated out ofexistence or people stop having kids or at least their kids stop havingfriends, SUVs have a valid niche. They may be ungainly and consume lots ofgas, but people said the same things about those godawful huge Oldsmobilemonsters that used to be the badge of a suburbanite. oldsmobile station wagons : Maybe. As with the CRV, it was designed for Japanese use, and wouldrequire some major mods before being a proper US-spec vehicle. And Hondaused to sell an extremely sophisticated AWD system on the previousgeneration Civic wagon. Nobody bought it. I honestly believe that Subarusales are based on equal parts 1) Subaru owner loyalty 2) The merits ofthe vehicle 3) the image of the Outback wagon. That one vehicle amounts toa huge chunk of their net gains in the past two years. And it's notsignificanly different from the other Legacy models, but LOOKS a greatdeal different. Unless the Honda wagon has that silly off-road look, itwill generate less than a yawn, regardless of whatever technologicalmerits it has.Audi can sell the A4 wagon as simply an alternative to the A4 sedan,which can stand toe-to-toe with vehicles costing much more.What about my beloved GM B-body wagons--the Caprice Classic and Roadmaster Estate? Gone at the end of the model year (production actually ceased in August). And even before that the seemingly forgotten (but not by me) Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser model, four years ago!

If you want to make a fashion statementor go off-road then go the SUV way. In this country most SUV purchasesrelate to the former reason as very few are used for the purpose theyare designed.They create the illusion of safety, but unless you hit something very muchsmaller this is just an illusion. Chassis rigidity and lack of crumplezones transmit higher forces to the passenger-seat belt unit resulting in higher injury.In this country they are very popular with middle class mums who loveappearing at the school gate with their status symbol. These same peoplehave a nasty habit of tailgating in their behemoths. The psychology of this would make interesting study! But I digress: a wagon will handle, perform, and crash way better thana SUV, and also probably have more room. SUV interior space is largelyillusional too. Wagons are also cheaper.
