subaru baja : I can't believe that nobody has mentioned the Detroit auto show Subaru news yet. They talked about the new Subaru Baja (was ST-X) and its release date of Sept2002.One reason nobody mentioned it is that that the Baja is very disappointing. It appears to be a smaller scale Chevy Avalanche in concept, complete withmassive amounts of plastic body cladding. It rivals the Pontiac Aztek andthe Nissan Frontier for petrochemical festooning. What happened to thesupercharged engine from the ST-X? All you get is the standard 165hp enginewith the standard Legacy middling performance in a package that's tryingreal hard to be macho. What? GM a bad influence?"DS" wrote in message...Agreed. I mean, I realize there's always a big difference betweenconcept car and production, but this leaves me with a sort of "whybother?" feeling. Nice idea, poor execution. Besides the weak NA 2.5L(couldn't they have at least offered the H6 as an option? Or the2.0T?), what happened to the low-range tranny? The ragtop sunroof? The8.5" of ground clearance?Perhaps the options you discuss (H6, primarily) will become available atrelease time...Even it looks so similar to current legacy. Why Subaru never produces a 2.5Lengine with turbo charger as Toyota does.
subaru baja : That's easy. They turbocharge a 2.0L engine because that's the maximumdisplacement for rally cars./~~ In < Re: Subaru Baja at the Detroit Auto Show >, tcassettewrote:Hi,I read an article saying, "when GM brought it up for the 2000 LAshow, Subaru didn't even know that GM was making that out oftheir Outback." So it was GM's idea originally (or still it is).Just for your information. The Subaru ST-X is interesting, I saw it in AutoWeek quite some time ago. Iforgot what kind of motor it has - I vaguely recall it being a flat-6.I was very surprised at these concepts, all of which have a chance atproduction:Ford GT40: Lincoln Continental concept:Pontiac Solstice: (Go Lutz!)Cadillac Cien:The concept ST-X had a supercharged 2.5l engine. Unfortunately the resultingBaja (Ba for short) gets the 2.5l naturally aspirated one.I had been waiting for this to be released to trade my turbo Talon AWD in on. Ilove my 99 SUS but the 2.5l is a little light on power. When Subaru 1st announcedthat they were going to produce a truck based on the STX, I went to my local dealerand was told that it was going to have a turbo, and that it would be available inorange. I'm feeling severely ripped off.I'm going to get a Cooper S MINI in April instead. subaru baja : What does everyone think of the Baja so far? I haven't seen any post inthis group about it.I think it looks rediculous. I know some people will buy them...but itsthe same sort of thing as that 'truck' that cadillac offers....I don't getit..It's no more ridiculous than the Avalanche, Aztec, or other specialty-typevehicles.I would've preferred a more simplified look with less gaudiness and luxury<reminiscent of the Brat>, and something that remotely suggests thetoughness of a truck - but that's not where mfr's and buyers apparently areright now.Apparently, the suggestion that sometimes "less is more" is out ofautomotive fashion.Vehicles like the Baja will be more profitable per unit than a base "truck".Nothing is as bad as the Aztec, well except the Avalanche.ScoobyDo~~~~~~"S.Lewis&qu ot; wrote in message...Subaru should have made a removeable hardtop for the back of Legacy andOutback wagons. Then they could add a midgate with a power window thatfolds backward into the floor of the bed. Then you would be able to drivearound in what looks like a Legacy wagon most of the time and use the pickupfeature when needed. The Baja looks like it definitely has some GM uglinessin it. It would have looked better if they used a Forester as a startingpoint instead of the Legacy.J subaru baja : In the original concept form, it was a very well planned product. Ok, maybeit had too many lights, but concept vehicles always are a bit overboard inat least some respect. I'm referring more to the supercharged 2.5L, clothroof, and awesome folding rear seats. I'm wondering if the dumbing down ofthe folding seats was due to GM's partnership with Subaru, since the Subarusystem totally spanked GM's lame Avalanche system. On the GM truck, youmust unclip and remove the rear window, whereas on the "STX" (Baja conceptvehicle) the rear window powered down into the rear seatback/bed front, similar to the back window of a Del Sol.I've always loved the original BRAT for it's simplicity - just a smallcar-based FWD truck that switched into 4x4 mode when you needed it. Thejumpseats were way cool too. :)On Sun, 19 May 2002 09:11:00 -0700, "Charles" wrote:I like it , I like the idea of being able to put things that are dirty andwet in the back bed.like big wet smelly dogs with drooly mouths and coats full of sand fromplaying in the surf.plus coolers full of beer, with bottoms covered in mud and sand.wet paddles, wet life jackets.bloody corpes......ooops nuff on that subject. ;-> subaru baja : It's the BRAT, reincarnate! It's about time that Subaru got back into themarket with these, especially right now.Looks like an Outback chassis, which could be a good thing. All thecomforts and handling of the Outback, but the plus of a sport pick-up.Wow that looks stupid. Reminds me waaay too much of an avalance or thoseretarded ford "trucks" with 4 doors and a 3 foot truck bed tacked onto theback. And the website, implying that if you have this truck* you will beable to do 101 things never before possible. Maybe it will make me a bettersurfer because it has room to put surfboards1!!!!"Since then, we received valuable feedback from our marketing partners, whoare the *opinion leaders for the active lifestyle*".-Fred Adcock, Exec.VP of SOAUgly beast that cannot do anything well. Subaru shows great brainpowerin some areas - this is a negative surprise.Let's start a pool as to when this unit is either taken from the marketor converted to a 'real' pickup with two doors and a decent bed size. Myentry is 365 days from the first hour it appears on showroom floors, detracting from the credibility of other Subaru products the dealer istrying to sell.
